Pic of the Week 11/10/16

Location: Caddo Lake, TX

Date taken: 6/5/2007

Going way back for this photo. In the winter of 2007 during my senior year in high school I was accepted into the North American Nature Photography Association as a National High School Scholarship winner. Every year NANPA meets at one of their annual summits to discuss and share all things nature photography. I was one of ten students across the country to be accepted. It was absolutely amazing! Our summit was held in Palm Springs, CA and just a short drive to Joshua Tree National Park. We spent a week meeting professional nature photographers and even had a portfolio review by some of them. It was such an awesome experience. I became good friends with some of the other students and one (who as also from Texas) suggested we come by her place during to summer. Fast forward to June of 2007 and I was with 3 of the students on our way to Caddo Lake State Park in eastern, TX. We were going to be touring the lake by boat and hoping to get some shots of wildlife and unique landscape. Sometime after sunrise I made this shot. The light that was spilling on the trees made a great background to the portrait of the egret. The egret helped scale the size of those massive Cypress trees and being directly along the light it sticks out nicely. The position of the bird is a bit different though--almost melancholy. With no other birds visible in the photo and the cypress trees looming behind the bird it created some excellent mood for the photo. The black and white processing makes the photo even more moody and really helps bring out the isolation of the bird. "Alone" was the only title I could think of for the photo. Its different from my usual style, but one that I believe has more emotion in the photo. This ended up being on of my favorite shots from our trip. We all had a great time and came back with some interesting photos.
